News Release Date: April 5, 2007
EMMITSBURG, MD. – The U.S. Fire Administration's (USFA) National Fire Academy (NFA) is pleased to announce the release of its Fiscal Year 2008 (FY08) Resident course schedule. The schedule includes those courses being delivered on the Emmitsburg, Maryland campus from October 1, 2007 through September 30, 2008. The FY08 schedule offers 13 new 6-day sessions and 16 new 10-day sessions, each filled with a wide variety of courses covering 10 curriculum areas.
"We recognize that this Nation's fire and emergency services personnel are extremely busy and that their time is valuable" said NFA Superintendent Dr. Denis Onieal. "We are moving toward more 6-day classes to minimize the student's time away from home and work but promise to deliver the same high-quality educational experience that our current students have come to expect."
For the first time, the NFA will have a mandatory prerequisite requirement for each course. "In order to align our programs with Department of Homeland Security directives, we require all NFA resident students to complete ICS 100 level and ICS 200 level training before they arrive at the National Emergency Training Center," said Onieal. "While we prefer that students complete the NFA's own ICS 100 (Q462 - ICS-100, Introduction to ICS for Operational First Responders) and ICS 200 (Q463 – ICS 200, Basic NIMS ICS for Operational First Responders) level self study courses available through NFA Online, we will accept other NIMS-compliant equivalent training provided by State and Federal agencies." This new prerequisite requirement is effective with classes beginning after October 1, 2007.
Interested applicants are encouraged to visit the USFA Web site to view the course schedule as well as the course specific description, selection criteria, and prerequisite information. Application information is also available. The FY08 First Semester Application Period opens in less than one month on May 1 and closes on June 30.
